My Writings. My Thoughts.

Tightrope Walkers

August 28th, 2009    No Comments »

Just wanted to announce the new EP we are working on for all those of you (I know you’re out there somewhere) waiting with bated breath for new material. The EP is currently planned as 4 songs all written within a conceptual framework based upon tightrope walkers.  The material has a little more electronic feel than Whale & Grouch offered, but we think there is some really cool stuff happening during the writing process that your ears should enjoy… As for a release date, count on sooner rather than later, early October is where my money is.

Here is a preliminary cover for the release…

And old, yet free album

Hey everybody,

Added an old album I did as a side project to our discography, you can download it free here (aiode.com). It’s a sleepscape I recorded a few years ago after taking a trip with my girlfriend around Canada’s east coast. What’s a sleepscape? A very slow, lyricless, and to most, boring as sin, collecion of found sounds and minimal instrumention… Try putting it on while going to sleep and let us know what you dream about. Hopefully dragons made of leather and onion flavored concrete.

Working on new material for an EP that will hopefully be in your ears soon.

So, for those of you who aren’t already aware, we often share lyrical responsibilities with our computers and their indifferent randomness. A few years ago Chris created a simple tool that collects words, phrases, and snips of lyrical inspirations that we log into it. Over time, we build up a database of phrases that at some times are based around a theme and at others, are entirely unrelated. The system then randomly grabs bits and pieces and re-arranges them into a sort of, exquisite poem, often surprising us with images and phrases we never would have even thought to smash together. We then filter that back through our human brains and try to pull together cohesive images/thoughts/sentences. This is how the ephemeral grouch and the looking whale came about.

Having finished and released the Whale & Grouch album, we just wiped the database clean of all the ocean imagery we had entered and are starting fresh for the next album. And we want any of you guys to help write it if you’re willing. Follow the link below to view the random wordplay generator and please feel free to add your phrases, or even just single words, to the box at the right hand side. As of now, we won’t restrict what you enter with any conceptual idea, so go nuts. Just please, don’t enter ‘doodie’, ’shitpiss’, or your first name (ahem, Jussie).

If all goes well, we’ll be using  everyone’s collaborative work as lyrical inspiration for the next album. Many thanks.

Here is a lovely treat from our excessively sleepless nights spent working on The Whale & Grouch. It somehow became a ritual to record a beat poem after each song had been mastered, and here is one of them. I warn you, we’d been listening to Tom Waits…

And so we run off into the forest…

We’re taking off to the wilds of Thunder Bay for the next 2 months to plant some trees. Really appreciate the positive response you’ve all been sending our way and definitely look forward reading any more comments you have when we return.

We’re planning to work on an acoustic based EP while we are on our wilderness retreat, so hopefully we’ll be releasing that shortly after we return.

Thanks again to everybody who has taken the time to listen to Whale & Grouch. Adios for now.

Leap Of The Looking Whale & The Ephemeral Grouch

Well ladies & gents, after who knows how long we’ve finally got our act together and recorded a new full-length.

The album is titled “Leap Of The Looking Whale & The Ephemeral Grouch” and tells the story of a beached looking whale and the bigot who happens upon it.  The story spans 4 days, and the rest, I believe, explains itself.

You can download it exclusively for the next 4 weeks at whatever price you can spare by visiting www.aiode.com/download. After which it will be available on iTunes and as hard copy.

Here’s hoping you all enjoy.

I recorded this little clip this afternoon while working on the new album. For any of you who heard our very first album it may make you grin, otherwise sorry for the inconvenience! Heh.

Apes play - always distant in their happiness.

Working hard on the album, we’ve got 8 tracks worked out and will be running into the forest for the week of April 20th in order to do the final tracking/mixing. We hope it will be available for all you lovely folks by the first of May, on iTunes and as a Direct Download.

Stay tuned.
