My work is a mash of materials explorations inspired by contemporary issues such as waste management, global warming, and media glamourization. I seem to be attracted to shiny objects, and collect them like a crow to include in paintings and assemblage work that is occaisionally reminiscent of or representing organic matter, creatures and industrial places. An avid recycler, I use almost entirely ‘re-loved’ canvas, boards, fabric, frames and tools.

I love to do art work, and I mean LOVE. I like making clay sculptures (boxes), Painting, wire sculpting, photography, jewellery, and my favourite: printmaking. When I printmake I use soft cut and carve designs, then use a water soluble paint to print onto T-shirts and canvas bags, or carved fiber glass with inks on the printing press.

Artist Statement
My attraction to knitting and sewing comes from a desire to take fashion design and production away from large, mass-produced logos and bring it back into the hands of the people who wear it. I am often inspired by common objects or articles of clothing that I then challenge myself to make in new, creative, and unique ways. My work is mainly knitted, with some sewing, beadwork, and embroidery acting as an embellishment to the knitted piece.
I like to think of my work as the fourth “R” to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Remake. I am always exploring new and different uses for old materials, and as a result have created a variety of items by knitting plastic grocery bags, old T-shirts, and by using fabric from thrifted clothing to make fun adn frugal linings for my knitted purses and bags.

The landscapes of the Haliburton Highlands and my travels across Canada and the United States are my muse. The colours, movement, and power within nature are a never ending source of inspiration. As an emerging artist, I am still exploring what direction my work will take, whether it be realistic, impressionist, or conceptual.
My work is a mixture of acrylic paintings on wood and canvas, wood cut and intaglio printmaking using plexiglass. Many of my pieces are based on onsite scetches done in pastel or photos that I have taken. Through my sketches I can take the essence of the place or situation that I wish to recreate, without limiting myself to it and all of its details.

Darby Bayly
Age: 28
Medium: Fabric & Paper
Artist Statement
Darby Bayly is an artist, who through much exploration of various media has come to realize that she is an illustrator at heart. However, her practical nature has led her to also create functional canvases for her illustrations. These canvases have ranged from bowls and mugs to clothing and greeting cards, quilts and bags. Currently she is working with two relatively simple printmaking techniques; linocut and silkscreen, on both fabric and paper. Both of these processes allow the artist to modify and “play” with their images, thus working and re-working their ideas indefinitely. Darby is excited and inspired by bright, bold colours, unusual textures, ocean dwellers, Richard Scarry, whimsical fantasy creatures, Maurice Sendak, childrens toys, postage stamps, retro wallpaper, Quentin Blake, Roald Dahl, and many of her creative peers.
Hi everyone, this is just a quick note to let you all know that we’ve made some changes to the Newfanglers website and from here on in, we’ll have multiple authors and daily artist biographies. The long and short of it is that our content will be updating more regularly and the site is taking shape as a more community-based forum for everyone involved to use.
Keep posted, we’re getting things together as I type.
